About Us
High Horizons was established in 2005, originally offering hiking and trekking experiences in the Drakensberg Mountains. Over time, this foundation grew into a deeper focus on knowledge, responsibility, and leadership in mountain environments.
Paul Roth is a Mountain Training Standards (MTS) certified instructor, specialising in Mountain Leadership. His teaching is shaped by many years of hands-on experience in the Drakensberg and a strong respect for both people and place.
Paul is also an Honorary Officer with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, contributing to the care and protection of KwaZulu-Natal’s natural mountain areas. In addition, he assists the Mountain Club of South Africa (MCSA) as a Rescue Co-convener for Mountain Rescue in KwaZulu-Natal, supporting search and rescue operations in challenging terrain.
High Horizons operates from home, with direct access to the Drakensberg Mountains and a nearby river environment, allowing for practical, real-world teaching in a natural setting rather than a classroom alone.
At High Horizons, learning is rooted in real experience, sound judgement, and respect for the environment. Teaching is kept practical, thoughtful, and grounded in the realities of mountain conditions, and therefore preparing people not just to pass assessments, but to make good decisions in the mountains.
